I blame my mother for that (my broad background based on reading) and I also thank her for that gift. My mother is an elementary school teacher, so I was brought up in a household where you were made to read. You read every day... I thank her tremendously today for all of the times that she made me sit down at a table and read a book.
So I think my flexibility in dealing with people, particularly international, is because of those many hours that my mother made me sit and read books, different cultural books, to enhance my knowledge of different people [so] that me--as a woman of color--was not the only type of woman that I would ever be exposed to in life.
