A gunner's mate is responsible for the overall maintenance does maintenance on weapons; cleaning, storing, and accounting for them. Gunner's mates also train Sailors to load, handle, and shoot guns. The gunner's mate is part of the security team on board a ship or at a Navy command ashore. The Surface Warfare addition to this title refers to additional responsibilities for all aspects operating and protecting the ship and its systems, including weapons, navigation, and damage control systems.
